I'm kind of new to the whole creating themes business. I was wondering if someone could tell me how I can get smaller images to not "distort" when I enlarge them to the required HD standards. If that's not possible, could someone let me know where I could go to find images that large, Google and Yahoo aren't really working for me.

ya if you enlarge a small image too much it will start to look pixelated and choppy, always better to shrink or crop an overly large image. If there is a small image you are dead-set on using, you can try some of the sharpening tools in photoshop. An image will distort if you are 'stretching' it into place, otherwise it shouldn't really 'distort' if you are simply enlarging it without changing the aspect ratio. (with "constrain proportions" ON, enlarge to 1920 width, then just crop the height to avoid 'stretching')

-Go to Google, click 'Images' (at the top).
-Now click the little camera icon in the search field, it should say "Search by image - Search Google with an image instead of text."
-Click "Upload an image"
-Browse & upload the image you want to use from your computer
-It 'should' say "Find other sizes of this image"
-Click "Large"

with a little luck you might be able to find a larger size of the image you want to use.

If you're searching Google make sure to select images (at the top), and over on the left side select "Any size" and click "Large" or "Any size > Larger than >then choose a size (I usually choose 'Larger than 1600 px (width))" or "Any Size > Exactly 1920 x 1080"

A great place to find amazing large & HD backgrounds is 'deviantart.com'. Once there browse your way over to Category>Customization>Wallpaper>HDTV & Widescreen

Hope this helps
